The Coalition to Protect America’s National Parks (Coalition) issued a statement of support for the listening session hosted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (UDSA) to receive community feedback on the proposed designation of the Sáttítla National Monument.

“Last week, hundreds of community members gathered to voice their overwhelming support for Sáttítla National Monument,” said Emily Thompson, Deputy Director of the Coalition. “We thank the USDA for hosting this meeting and we support the efforts of the Pit River Nation and local community to permanently protect Sáttítla as a national monument.

The 200,000 acres of sacred and significant landscape in the Medicine Lake Highlands of Northern California are deep-rooted in heritage for the Pit River Tribe and other Indigenous people. These lands contain historical and cultural resources that are reflective of the long-standing connections to the region. In addition, the Medicine Lake Aquifer is an enormous, pristine hydrological recharge and storage area, which serves as a buffer against increasing drought and climate change and provides critical habitat connectivity for vulnerable species.

We urge President Biden to act now and protect Sáttítla.”
