Coalition Supports Expansion of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument
Today, Representative Judy Chu and Senator Alex Padilla of California have asked President Biden to use his authority under the Antiquities Act to add over 109,000 acres to the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. This action would help preserve an area that is rich in historical and ecological significance and also help to provide equitable access to outdoor recreation opportunities for millions of people.
Mike Murray, Chair of the Coalition to Protect America’s National Parks, issued this statement:
“The San Gabriel Mountains National Monument currently protects the Magic Mountain Wilderness, unique geological features, incredible biodiversity, and hundreds of significant archeological sites. It attracts millions of visitors every year who are drawn to a wide range of recreational opportunities.
We strongly support the expansion of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. Adding over 109,000 acres of relatively pristine national forest lands to the monument will better protect the numerous threatened species that live there, as well as more than 40 miles of rivers. In addition, it will provide increased outdoor access for historically underserved communities.
We urge President Biden to use his authority under the Antiquities Act to expand the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. This action will help to ensure the protection of irreplaceable resources and move us another step closer to achieving the conservation goals laid out in the America the Beautiful initiative.”
