Coalition Celebrates Expansion of Two National Monuments

Today, President Biden used his authority under the Antiquities Act to expand the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, both located in California.

“We applaud President Biden’s actions to expand both the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument,” said Phil Francis, Chair of the Coalition to Protect America’s National Parks.

“Including Molok Luyuk as part of Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument will safeguard existing public lands that are sacred to the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation and protect critical habitat that will help preserve biodiversity and allow for continued wildlife migration in the face of a changing climate.

The San Gabriel Mountains National Monument expansion will help to better protect over 100,000 acres of public lands that serve as important habitat and wildlife corridors for numerous species. This expansion effort will also provide increased access to the great outdoors for historically underserved communities and honor the landscape’s cultural significance.”

We thank President Biden for his actions today and urge him to continue to work towards our country’s goal of conserving 30% of public lands and waters by 2030 by designating additional proposed national monuments such as Chuckwalla National Monument, Kw’tsán National Monument, and Sáttítla.
