Coalition Applauds Congressional Support for Sáttítla National Monument
Last week, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla sent a letter – co-signed by Senator Laphonza Butler and Representative Adam Schiff – to President Joe Biden, calling for the President to use the Antiquities Act to designate Sáttítla National Monument.
The Coalition to Protect America’s National Parks, issued the following statement in support of a national monument designation for Sáttítla:
“We thank Senators Padilla and Butler and Representative Schiff for supporting the Pit River Nation’s request to have more than 200,000 acres of federally managed land in the Medicine Lake Highlands of Northern California, known as Sáttítla, protected as a national monument.
This landscape holds significance to the cultural and spiritual values of numerous Tribal Nations, including the Pit River Nation. In addition, designating the Sáttítla National Monument will help to protect a crucial water source for millions of Californians and safeguard critical habitat for wildlife such as bald eagles and black bears.
Unfortunately, this irreplaceable landscape continues to be at risk from the threat of industrial development and is in need of additional protection.
We urge President Biden to support the Pit River Nation and act swiftly to permanently protect Sáttítla through a national monument designation.”
