Coalition Supports Public Meeting Advancing the Expansion of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument

The USDA Forest Service held a listening session to hear from the local community about efforts to advance the expansion of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. The locally driven effort to add more than 109,000 acres of public lands to the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument has the support of elected officials, tribal officials, and community leaders.

Mike Murray, Chair of the Coalition to Protect America’s National Parks, issued the following statement:

“Expanding the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument will help to protect wildlife corridors, critical habitat, archeological sites, and a culturally significant landscape. In addition, it will help ensure equitable access to a wide range of recreational opportunities for the local community and visitors.

We applaud the listening session and appreciate the willingness of the USDA Forest Service to engage with the local community on the proposed national monument expansion.

The proposed expansion will not only help protect irreplaceable stories, resources, and landscapes – it will move us another step closer to achieving the conservation goals laid out in the America the Beautiful initiative. We urge President Biden to use his authority under the Antiquities Act to expand the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument.”
