“Public hearings during the preparation of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s General Management Plan clearly demonstrated that the scenic beauty of the Parkway should be preserved unimpaired for future generations. Congress should not take the unusual action of circumventing environmental laws to allow the Atlantic Coast Pipeline to cross lands that have been designated as units of the National Park System without first allowing for full and complete consideration of the impacts to the natural and cultural resources contained within their boundaries. To sidestep existing law establishes a dangerous precedent and amending the purpose of the Parkway could incrementally and forever alter the integrity of this most visited unit of the National Park Service. Congress should abide by its own laws and protect our country’s most special places.”
